5 Amazing 'Undiscovered' UK Hip Hop Artists

Here's a short list of some of the best but least known Hip Hop artists and groups.

It's always a good feeling when you discover a new artist that you can listen to on repeat for an extended number of days. What makes it feel that little more special is when you can follow their progress and watch them grow to become global superstars, thinking that you were there from the beginning!

Before I start this list of five unknown hip hop artists, I would like to give a shout out to everyone at High Focus Records, some of whom will feature in this list, although a fair few of their artists are starting to blow up, as well as Loyle Carner who I have followed since he had less than 1000 listens on Spotify, and now has millions of listens across all platforms.

So then, let's begin...

Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn are a rap/hip hop duo with a heavy focus on lyricism almost touching on spoken word. The beats, produced by Harvey Gunn, are relaxing and easy to listen to, which perfectly compliments Frankie Stew's monotonous but effective voice and clever lyrics. Although they do not produce the most punchy hip hop tracks, this is definitely a duo you are going to want to check out.

Much like Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn, Subculture Sage are a hip hop duo comprised of beat maker, Subculture Sounds, and lyricist, Hypeman Sage. Together they form an intelligent, witty, and hard-hitting hip hop act. The music that Subculture Sage makes covers all aspects of hip hop, from intense beats and hard lyrics to relaxing tunes and happy raps. They truly do have a song for every mood, definitely one to be explored.

Jam Baxter is not one to be taken lightly. His powerful and often relatively dark lyrics on top of hard-hitting beats make for great listening. His latest album, Mansion 38, is, in all sense of the word, a masterpiece. As a member of High Focus Records, you're also bound to find some amazing collaborations with the likes of Dirty Dike, Fliptrix, Leaf Dog, and Ocean Wisdom. Jam Baxter is a must if you love hip hop.

Quite possibly one of the most intelligent and outright greatest wordsmiths you're ever going to stumble across, Edward Scissortongue's baritone commentaries on awkward social issues and personal stories is a truly unique experience. Edward Scissortounge also has produced some great collaborations over the years, despite his relatively small audience, all in all making him a must-see hip hop artist.

Making a name for himself through rap battles, Lunar C's unique voice and dark humour makes for an incredible combination. Lunar C can sometimes stray into the genre of grime but his roots remain deeply sown into true UK hip hop. Lunar C tends to rap over intense and powerful beats and his latest song, "Mug," is a true example of that. Don't miss his one of a kind style.

That completes this short list, for now. I hope you have found someone you possibly hadn't heard of before reading this article and I urge you to search for the small artists and help them grow. There are so many undiscovered artists throughout every genre of music and often the smallest acts are the best. I have found a lot of joy from searching Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube and many more music streaming sites, searching for the next big thing. I’m sure there are hundreds of artists I could have chosen and hundreds more that some of you may consider worthy. These five, however, are my current personal favourites and are starting to have some pretty good success already. In this sense, I almost feel proud of these artists for actually making it, as thousands probably go unheard all the time. Thank you for reading, go do some research, and listen to more music… The UK hip hop scene is full of unknown talent.
