The Super Bowl's halftime show is known for its expansive performances. Some of the biggest artists of the day like Katy Perry, Coldplay, Missy Elliott, Prince, Aerosmith, and Bruno Mars have taken the stage in the past to perform during the 30-minute intermission. This year, Justin Timberlake will return for the first time since his 2004 performance with Janet Jackson that went down in history for its infamous "wardrobe malfunction." And the internet, being what it is, is apparently upset about that.

Back in 2004, the Grammy-winning singer, while performing his hit song "Rock Your Body", yanked off Jackson's bodice and exposed her right breast. Though Jackson said it was a wardrobe malfunction and an accident, she still bore the brunt of the blame, receiving heavy criticism, and she was not allowed to appear at the 2004 Grammys.

Even CBS got a smack on the hand when the Federal Communication Commission levied a fine in the amount of $550,000. Even though the Supreme Court tossed out the fine in 2012, there was no doubt CBS had gotten a stern reprimand. Timberlake, on the other hand, didn't seem to get as much of the fallout, if any. The "SexyBack" singer attended the 2004 Grammys.

Though Timberlake apologized for the fiasco, saying it "was not intentional" and was "regrettable", Janet Jackson's fans believe the former N'Sync member needs to apologize to her personally for not coming to her defense or even accepting a portion of the blame. Some fans—and even USA Today—are calling for Janet Jackson to appear with Timberlake.

Though there have been many reports that Jackson was banned by the NFL after the incident, thereby preventing her from appearing even if Timberlake wanted her to, a league spokesperson disputed the claim to ET saying "there is no ban." Further, ET reported that, according to a source close to Jackson, she is open to appearing alongside the superstar.

“The door is wide open. If Justin or his team did reach out, Janet would perform with him again in a minute.”

Whether or not Janet Jackson will appear on stage with Timberlake again, it's clear that much of Jackson's 3.4 million followers on Twitter want, at the very least, an apology. Maybe it's time to let it go, people.

The Superbowl airs on February 4, 2018.
