Room 93 EP cover

Let's talk about one of my favorite artists of this decade: Halsey.

This talented girl, who's been making a lot of noise, started a successful music career uploading popular music covers to YouTube just like any other regular teenager with the same hobby, and today we see a more mature woman performing for thousands of people all around the world, delighting the crowd with her marvelous music.

But what makes Halsey so unique, or perhaps, so cliché? Well, sorry for disappointing you, but that's not an answer you will find in this blog post, it's up to you. But If we take a look at the history, we'd see a biracial little girl (with European and Afro-American roots directly from her parents) struggling in her childhood while enjoying her artistic qualities, and her clear inclination for painting, until eventually jumping into music, influenced by her parent's icons, among those we found names like Biggie and Nirvana (as she expressed in her popular song "New Americana"), and the environment where she grew up, releasing her first single to the internet and going practically, I mean, literally viral overnight, thus detonating her career.

And now the successful woman is influencing other people with her passion, unique style, and controversial lyrics.

As I mentioned before, Halsey is one of my favorite artists, and has been my favorite female singer since the release of her first studio album, unfortunately, at that time, I hadn’t heard about the EP that we are talking about in this blog post, but I remember I was fascinated when I listened to it the first time. Especially with "Is There Somewhere," which personally, is my favorite one.

But let's go back in time to 2014, probably one of the most critical and emblematic years in Halsey's life, but with no doubt, in Halsey's career. The year when the American record label owned by Universal Music Group called Astralwerks released Halsey's debut EP Room 93, which in words of Halsey herself, the EP was inspired by her "obsession with the intimacy of hotel rooms" mostly because she spent quite a lot of time living out of hotels when she was just starting her career; the relationships she made within those walls, and the fictional sensation of a home gave her the perfect dose of isolation that we intrinsically perceive in this EP.

You should definitely go listen to it if you haven't done it before, because this is probably the most transparent piece of work that Halsey has ever provided to her fans: in this EP we will find Halsey's first single "Ghost," along with four other songs, but most importantly, we will connect with the true Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (Halsey's real name) and her deepest feelings and emotions, who's telling us honest stories about her past, her relationships, her struggles, her experiences, and most of all, her life. A life full of ups and downs, but well rewarded as Halsey's career rises, releasing several singles, doing some collaborations, guest appearances with Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds to Mars, and creating two studio albums (Badlands in 2015 and Hopeless Fountain Kingdom in 2017).

Now we're looking forward to new singles, collabs, and of course, a new album. In the meanwhile, and with no further introduction for this brief blog post, let's jump into these Room 93 interesting and clever lyrics that reflects in many ways Halsey's personality.

"Is There Somewhere"

"And I promised myself I wouldn't let you complete me.

[...]

And I try to refrain, but you're stuck in my brain,

And all I do is cry and complain, because second's not the same."

"I'm sorry but I fell in love tonight,

I didn't mean to fall in love tonight,

You're looking like you fell in love tonight,

Could we pretend that we're in love?"

"Ghost"

"I'm searching, for something, that I can't reach.

[...]

I like the sad eyes, bad guys,

Mouth full of white lies,

Kiss me in the corridor,

But quick to tell me 'goodbye'."

"I'm off the deep end, sleeping,

All night through the weekend,

Saying that I love him, but

I know I'm gonna leave him."

"Hurricane"

"A little liquor on my lips,

I let him climb inside my body,

And held him captive in my kiss."

"I'm a wanderess,

I'm a one night stand,

Don't belong to no city,

Don't belong to no man.

I'm the violence, in the pouring rain,

I'm a hurricane."

"Empty Gold"

"I, I must confess,

How hard I tried to breathe

Through the trees of loneliness

[...]

Feel like we've been falling down

Like these autumn leaves,

But baby don't winter come,

Don't let our hearts freeze."

"We're the alley cats and they can throw their stones,

They can break our hearts, they won't take our souls.

[...]

In the morning light don't steal our soul,

We will walk away from empty gold."

"Trouble"

"Would you bleed for me?

Lick it off my lips like you needed me?

Would you sit me on a couch?

With your fingers in my mouth?

You look so cool when you're reading me."

"But I've got my mind, made up this time

'Cause there's a menace in my bed.

[...]

Oh, you make me feel so weak

I bet you kiss your knuckles

Right before they touch my cheek."
