The Kurulas
I've always been blessed to have good neighbors. All the horror stories I've read online about yelling Karen's and creepy Carl's were never true for me. The Mendoza's right next door always shared their cooking, and with my nonexistent self control, I never said no to the huge carbs in their neighborhood famous enchiladas de pollo. The Hoang's the next street over on Elman's didn't mind everyone mispronouncing their last name. Every time I messed up, Miss Lorena Hoang would just say, "You're at least trying". But if you forced me to say, I would say that the only neighbors I didn't think fondly of was the Kurula's that lived in the mansion in the woods. Adam and Priya Kurula were social only when needed, it felt like. Which is fine, I should say, not everyone needs to be at the door ready to socialize twenty four hours a day.

The world smells so good when you're hungry, like the malevolent phantoms in the cartoons I can feel the aromas pulling me towards these places. The intoxicating scent of Mexican spices, the comfortable aromas of the good old American burger, and the nostalgic smell of simple unhealthy foods from the fast food joints. But then those same feelings can turn into a miserable assault on the senses when I have no money to buy even a single item off the value menu. And it suddenly turns the feelings of comfort and nostalgia into jealousy and hate. I'm jealous of the people inside the restaurant. I hate how they throw away plates with food left over. My stomach hurts.

Why leaving behind good memories rewards you.
As a kid growing up, I was a very typical archetype of the "Weird Kid" that passed for the early 2000's. I was into stuff that wasn't popular back then, I had smelly clothes because my family was poor and we didn't have money for detergent sometimes, but most of all because I was a young kid with Asperger's, I just did not know how to talk to people. It wasn't a dramatic case of society failing me or the school district not teaching me what was necessary to connect to people. I was just inexperienced and awkward. That being said, people around me always gave me a chance, and I always tried to make friends. It was never a graceful thing, and sometimes I overstepped social bounds in a bad way. Texting people at midnight, being sad if they didn't hang out with me everyday. It was toxic, and everyday I try to improve and move away from that. But even though I did not navigate social situations well, I still had gracious friends who I still remember to this day, and surprisingly they remember me as well.

Why Your Favorite Franchises are getting "ruined"
We all know the situation. It's been happening to all your favorite stuff. Your favorite book series, movie franchise or video game sequel. Whatever it is, if you've been around long enough, your favorite thing has been "ruined" or you've seen people complaining about it. Either way, there's a very simple reason for it. It makes money by guaranteeing that you have a lot of eyes on whatever product you are trying to push out.

Why it's important to Not lose Hope
Hope. The light at the end of the tunnel. The better times. The dream that makes you smile when you wake up. Hope seems to be in low supply these days and it's understandable with the COVID19 pandemic putting some people's lives either on pause, fast forward or entirely ejected from the tape. But it's important to still have hope in exactly these types of times. Despite the blatant harm that people go through, the destruction of families, the absolute devouring of hope, you need to have some hope.

The Grudge (2020) Review
The Grudge (2020) is a far cry from the 2002 movie, and an even farther cry from the Japanese legend that started the whole franchise. The pacing is messy, the characters are forgettable, the suspension is purchased with cheap jump scares and stereotypical "scary movie music". When it comes to good examples of scary movies, this movie is positively amazing. It's an amazing example of how to not make a good horror movie. It has all the classic stereotypes of bad horror movies: characters that have no intelligence, that are naïve, characters that are deemed crazy and yet not helped but rather abandoned, jump scares, messy story telling, and horrible cinematography. I could ramble on and on about how bad this movie was in general, but it would be better to speak in specifics.

Reach
Reach for it, stand on your toes, jump, run, leap, reach for that better side the people always talk about. The "It gets better" side, the "It gets easier to figure out" side, the "Why did I ever worry that much?" side. If you feel like you don't have the strength, nor the reach, dig deep inside and have your inner child help. Give them a piggy back ride, have them stand on your shoulders, be their three-piece totem pole. Shame, of what you've become. Regret, of what you have done. Redemption, of what you are willing to do to have that pocket full of good times. Reach for it, run for it, have your inner child convince you that it's possible. Reach.
