Playlists

Lately, I’ve been having a lot of fun making playlists. I find it relaxing and a good way to express yourself through the music. Of course, when Vocal announced it’s anti-valentines playlist, I gave it a go straight away. I reccomend anyone who‘s a writer on Vocal to give their challenges a try, because they do have some challenges that free members can write for as well. At the moment, they have a very generous three month trial. I’ve attached my playlist on Spotify below and I’m gonna go through with why I picked them.

Single ladies, bachelors, lovers and more are sure to catch some feelings with the Valentine’s Day inspired playlist that has been compiled below. It’s one thing to gift flowers and chocolates but what about surprising that special someone with a custom playlist - perhaps even an old-school mixtape?

I'm not one to make excuses, but I'm sure we can all agree on blaming Covid-19 for ruining our Valentine's day this year. If there is ANY holiday that should be neutralized in the name of Corona it is definitely Valentine's day. This playlist should lend a helping hand to anyone who feels left out, downhearted, or just downright cramped by the restrictions of Covid-19.

First, I must say, it was easy to compile this list of the most unromantic, un-Valentine songs. The hardest part was narrowing them down to just 10. Just reading the lyrics brings back memories of my worst relationships and feelings of heartbreak and self-destruction. It took a lot of chocolate and wine to bring me back from that dark place.

Calling out to my fellow millennials. Bring your side parted hair and gather round! This wouldn't be an Anti-Valentine's Day playlist without the classic opening song from Bridget Jones' Diary. As cringe worthy as it was epic, this scene made every one of us feel that little bit better about the time we too, had gotten drunk by ourselves and cried/sung a classic 80s love song at the top of our lungs. It was ok. We were not alone.

My dad was a high school band and choir teacher. He taught us to love music in all its forms. I grew up listening to everything! No genre was off limits. If it had melodies and harmonies that were interesting to the ear or even clever lyrics, it was celebrated in our house. To this day, my playlist consists of everything from bluegrass (Have you ever heard Nickel Creek???) to old school rap and hip hop (Dolla Dolla Bill, yall!)

I think I've had one successful Valentine's Day with a significant other. I'm in a commited relationship currently, and we decided early on that Valentine's Day wouldn't be made a big deal. However, I was driving to the Los Angeles Flower Market with my best friend, Caitlin, today and she said to me, "I'm gonna use this holiday as a self-care day. A me-day. A girl power day." So, we drove and put together a playlist of all-female artists from all eras, singing about self-love, female empowerment, and you guessed it, sex. Warning - explicit language.

Ah, Valentine’s day. You either love it, or you hate it. And let’s be honest, the feeling varies depending on where you stand that particular year. You may be in one of the following stages:
The Geek Girl's 110 Love Songs
I always thought it would be cool to be a radio DJ, a little bit of talking and playing music all day. Somewhere between my late childhood or early teens, I remember listening to the radio in the evenings and hearing Delilah. Does anybody else remember her? My local radio station must have quit airing her show, so I was surprised to learn that 1) she’s still around, and 2) she’s actually syndicated all throughout the country. If you don’t remember or don’t know Delilah, the radio personality, her show usually runs from 7pm to midnight. With romance as one of her themes throughout the night, she would take calls on air from listeners wanting to dedicate a song to a significant other.

This is a Valentine’s Day playlist for single people. I know, already that sentence is teeming with social assumptions of loneliness, pity and, for some bizarre patriarchal reason, a middle-aged woman with a sitting room full of cats. I want you to stop right there.
Fertility, Goats, and Sacrifice
I'm not anti-romantic, BUT... I've always hated Valentine's day, mostly because it didn't make any sense. The way people celebrate it has nothing to do with what it used to be.

Playlists are the soundtracks of our lives. They say who we are as people, what we love, what we hate and what we desire. Music has the ability to take us places we didn’t know we needed to go and allows us the space to express our feelings in ways we didn’t know we needed.
