England's Amazing Underground Music Scene
From the busy capital, to the rural towns, music is vibrant; lively. You just need to know where to look.
OK. So when I talk about British music I'm not talking your average Ed Sheeran, The 1975, and Sam Smith. I'm talking about the real, juicy, good stuff, which you will come to understand as you read on.
British artists are pretty big in America with the likes of chart toppers such as Adele, The Vamps, Niall Horan, etc. In fact, it's the biggest take over we've had since the Beatles were around, the difference now is that the music is, generally, sub par.
But still, why is it that when we look to the British charts, or even switch on the radio, all we hear is the same handful of 'big name' artists. It's becoming discouragingly boring and very very repetitive.
It's about time the beauty, and diversity, of the underground music scene came to the surface. We have to give these creative young artists a fair chance!
Steez
On one magical night a month, an event called Steez takes place, deep in the south of London. It's a creative hub for artists that need a platform to express themselves. Its an event offering the chance to get your name out there, and have your music appreciated by artists also trying to make a name for themselves. The mutual respect creates a safe, encouraging environment that is a recipe for a great night and awesome performances. It's also a great way to bring together all the 'underground' artists, scattered around London, allowing them to vibe together and collaborate on new tracks.
Some of my top picks for up and coming, young British artists are:
Indigo Husk
By far my favourite, this band consists of four very talented performers that always deliver a high energy set. They play a mix of grunge, jazz, and pop (truly amazing). If they ever play anywhere near you, I highly recommend you go and see the show.Billy Lockett
Billy has a very simple yet effective style of music. He combines beautiful piano melodies with emotional songwriting, and the result is magical. He really is one to watch.
Hardy Caprio
Twenty-one-year old Hardy has begun following in the footsteps of Stormzy, Loyle Carner, and Krept & Konan. He's making a name for himself in the UK urban scene. I would watch this one closely, with releases coming over the next few months, I predict his fanbase will skyrocket!
Nimmo
This moody double act is sure to make you get up and dance. With an 80s vibe and husky harmonies, they are sure to win you over. They have only a few singles, but have still managed to band together a loyal following. They are sure to be a homemade success.
Visionist
Visionist has a very creative approach to the electronic genre of music. He samples sounds and turns them into something beautifully unrecognisable. I would really seriously look out for this guy, he's rising to the top with real loyal fans and whole lot of love for his art.
