EveningShade’s 'Impulses'

EP Review

James Pinkstone, aka EveningShade, is an Atlanta-based electronic composer with a passion for horror flicks reflected within his songs. While some of the tunes from EveningShade will have you nostalgic for 80s horror flicks, not all of the songs on this EP will make you afraid of things that go bump in the night—but they will all give you a feel of that genre long gone and make you want to watch all of your favorite flicks, from John Hughes to Jason Voorhees.

Impulses is home to four striking electronic songs, sans vocals, that will lull you into a sense of fear at times, and a sense of calm at others. Each song has a vibe all its own and will inspire thoughts of different vintage memories in your mind (if you’re a child of the 80s, anyway).

The first track, “The Woods,” definitely has a spooky vibe. It evokes thoughts of serial killers stalking you in the woods or in your dreams. It’s a track that makes me want to dig out all of my favorite horror flicks and watch them all again. It’s one of those pieces you’d expect to hear when the camper is running from the killer, or when they’re doing something they shouldn’t and you know they’re going to be the next to go.

“There She Was” made me reminiscent of all of my favorite 80s teenage drama flicks starring, of course, Molly Ringwald. It’s like a John Hughes flick lost in the electronics of an instrumental masterpiece. It’s the music you’d expect to hear when Blane shows up at the prom and Andie sees him, and they reunite.

“Making Love To Sarah Connor” isn’t as science-fiction-laced as you’d expect it to be with such a name, but it does seem to have a mild otherworldly quality sound to it. This is a song I feel like I could dance to at a dark Goth club. I like the outro of this track, which almost makes you think of a heartbeat, but an irregular one.

“Passing In The Dark” sounds like something you’d expect to hear on the X-Files or Fringe, maybe even Stranger Things. It has a spooky sound, but not quite right for a horror film. It has an “alien” feel to it. It builds up in volume, so it could be like you’re being stalked by a killer or alien being— one that is taking its time and let you grow even more fearful as it plots its attack. The song is calm and ends on a non-dramatic note. So maybe you got away from the killer, or maybe not. We’ll never know.

I seriously dug these four tracks. This is the kind of music I love to listen to when I am writing or working on arts/crafts. It’s gorgeous and seeps into your mind and your soul, but it’s not distracting or too loud. The lack of vocals lets you create your own story in your head—inspiring!
