How to Dance Like Nobody Is Watching

Set your mind and body free.

Dance like you're not on Earth!

Let us set a scene: you're at a concert... the bass is shaking the floors like a subtle earthquake, the lights look like laser beams coming from every direction, a groovy beat starts ripping through the sound of silence. You close your eyes and feel the sound waves in every cell. You notice your foot start to tap to the rhythm, your head bobs up and down like a beer can in water (please don't litter), and then you open your eyes... Boom, just like that, the groove is gone. You look around and everyone is moving to a different beat than you, you try to copy their moves and it doesn't feel natural. You start to sweat and feel heavy. It feels like the entire room is looking at you and your off-beat body movements. Ever been there? I have. Here is how I overcame the fear of dancing to the beat of my own drum...

First thing's first, be confident. Have you ever seen a dorky lookin' person score a hot date on the dance floor? That is because they have confidence. If you are enjoying yourself and the present moment completely, nobody can bring you down. By having confidence in yourself, you are inspiring others to have confidence in themselves, and that is a beautiful butterfly effect! Here are a few things you can do to raise those confidence levels:

  • Wear your favorite colors/textures (I love sparkles and rainbows, but whatever makes you feel happy, wear it loud and proud.)
  • Wear a good pair of dancin' shoes (Be comfortable, you can't dance with broken ankles and blisters.)
  • Dance in the mirror first (Turn the volume to 100 and jam out, don't forget to laugh and smile.)
  • Remember that we are all just particles of energy experiencing various human avatars (Those who judge you are actually just judging themselves.)
After you feel comfortable in your human flesh suit, you are ready to get that thang movin'! Here is an easy guide for riding the sound waves:
  • Start with the bass... this is the first building block, imagine it as what it is, a wave. Close your eyes and listen for the rhythm, then picture it as water, start to tap your feet and then allow your head to join the flow.
  • After the base (bass haha) is established, start to rock your hips from side to side, imagine that you are now on a surfboard, riding the sound waves.
  • The key is to relax your muscles and your mind, be like water, flow freely and loosely.
  • One of the hardest parts to figure out is what the h*ll do I do with my arms?! It's simple, let them flail around like those inflatable dancing guys they put in front of car retail lots (in fact, those guys are the prime example of dancing like nobody is watching.)

At the core of everything... we are all experiencing life, none of us know how we got here or where we are going, the only thing we ever really have is the present moment. So be in the moment completely with your fellow humans, remember that they probably don't know what they are doing either. Everyone is dancing to the beat of their own drum of life. Nobody cares that you don't move like a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. All you can do is be yourself, enjoy the music, and let your body jiggle around like a tiny little cube of jello in an empty shipping container going 78 miles per hour on a bumpy road. By being free and dancing to the beat of your own drum, you are sending out that energy to everyone around you, and ultimately, to the entire universe. Keep on groovin'.
