Kodak Black — 'Project Baby 2' Album Review

Full Album Review

This will be my first review of an album, or I should say "Mixtape" Review, and I thought this would be a good start because for one, like many millennials my age, we are not so quick to judge the new flow and culture of the rappers now emerging into the rap game and also after hearing Kodak Black’s previous album, Painting Pictures, I thought it was finally time to hear some more music from him.

So, before storing this review I just want to say that Painting Pictures was the first album by Kodak Black that I had to listen to fully so that is the album that I’ll be comparing Project Baby 2 to when writing this review. Obviously, I’ve heard some of his bigger hits such as "No Flockin'" and "Skrt," which helped him gain popularity and which ended with him landing a record deal with Atlantic Records.

Kodak Black, if you didn’t know, has been working on this album since he was released from prison in June of this year and has been constantly showing followers snippets of a few songs off the album when he would go live on Instagram. So, there was some hype and anticipation leading up to him getting ready to drop this project.

Going into listening to this album, I expected it to be filled with a lot of “club bangers” or just music that you could dance to, but on this album, it digs into Kodak Black’s more personal side with having to do with relationships to just stuff he has had to deal with coming to fame. The streaming platform that I decided to listen to this album on was Apple Music. I love using this platform because on every album there are certain songs that have stars by them which are usually the standout tracks for what I believe to be the artist's favorite ones off the project. I usually listen to those first then listen to the rest of the songs on the album after I finish those. Like I said, earlier there were a few songs that he showed followers on Instagram that I was looking forward to hearing the full version of those songs when the album finally dropped. One of those songs was “Don’t Wanna Breathe,” where Kodak Black speaks on a relationship where you can’t seem to live without this person. Another song that sounded really familiar was “Transportin',” which I soon figured out was because of the beat samples, Geto Boys' classic hit, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.”

For me, personally, my favorite songs off this album had to be “6th Sense,” “Don’t Wanna Breathe,” and “My Kilk,” which features JackBoy & John Wick. I think my main reasoning behind liking these songs the best was because of the vibe they give off, and I can see myself playing them pretty much anywhere. I definitely would say this album is worth a listen but I wouldn’t suggest listening if all you’re looking for is hype music or for things you can dance to, because this album is mostly filled with things that make you want to think, reflect, or just honestly be able to understand where Kodak Black is coming from. So, to end this blog post, if I was going to give this album a rating, it would be an 8/10, mainly because some of the songs just seem like they were put together randomly. It made no sense whatsoever that they were in this project and if there were fewer songs, it would've made it better.
