How I found out about Miya Folick couldn’t have been more perfect and special for me, personally. I saw my favorite band, Foster the People, in Portland, Maine in 2017. I’ve been dying to see them since their debut album, Torches, came out in 2011. It didn’t even cross my mind that there would be an opening act. I was too excited for them.
When I saw the opening act, which I now know is Miya Folick, walk to the front of the stage, I remember her wearing a royal blue blazer with a matching pencil skirt. I was into it! I liked her style.
Not knowing who this mystery woman was, or the type of music she played, I didn't know what was coming my way. I was absolutely astounded after hearing her voice and the band. I couldn't wait to get home and listen to this melodic wonder so I could fully grasp the true beauty of Miya Folick's voice and lyrics. The pure power of Folick's voice sent chills down my entire body, and those chills still manage to shake me to my core each time I listen to her. Her voice gives me hints of Florence Welch, but Folick's music is definitely her own. I can't pinpoint a specific genre that she sings, and I don't really want it to be in any genre.
It's just good music.
This is especially true every time I listen to her song, "Give It To Me," on her EP, Give It To Me. The calm to beautifully loud waves to this song is what makes it so powerful. Her music video for "Give It To Me" perfectly fits into the song's overall experience that the listener gets when they listen to it.
Miya Folick’s EP, Strange Darling, could be left on repeat for hours, and I wouldn’t get tired of it. It’s the kind of EP where I want to go out and buy an expensive record player and buy it on vinyl.
There's not much else I can say, and I mean that in the best way possible. The most impressive things in life and art don't need much explaining. Viewers and listeners will agree that she has beautiful visuals and hear that she has the voice of an angel. I'm excited to see what she has in store for the future. I just know Miya Folick will create something worthwhile.
I encourage anyone and everyone to listen to this pure artistry. That is all.
