We are half way through 2018 as we know it and music has really come along way if you think about it, especially the Rap Genre. Now, I may have only been born in 1999 and most of you could really say that I don't know about the history of music because I haven't lived through it, however, although music has changed within the creativity and music industry - you can clearly see the difference. The only things that have been kind of kept the same are the things which are sang about such as: love, mental issues, murder and alcohol/drugs. In this blog, I will be addressing where rap started and where it is now.

Lets go back to when rap came alive. Yes I'm talking Notorious B.I.G, Tupac, Eazy-E, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre and other members of N.W.A.

N.W.A

Ice Cube, MC Ren, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and Dr. Dre

N.W.A also known as: Niggaz Wit Attitudes, was an American hip hop group from Los Angeles, California. They were among the earliest and most significant figures of the Gangsta Rap Genre, and are widely considered one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of hip hop music. This group at that time was known as disrespectful towards women and also known for the involvement of drugs and crimes. This got them in a lot of trouble with the police and around the time of the 80s-90s in Northern America, racial-crime and racial-attacks took place. Things overturned for the NWA when their shows were shut down by the police when performing songs like: "Fuck Tha Police" as it grew tension and abuse towards the government meaning that crime began to grow within LA and the surrounding areas. Years after members disbanded and the death of Eazy-E, the N.W.A split up and went their separate ways. Some people ask the same questions of: "Where are they now?" and for some of the members; who knows? Some of the members went separate ways and down different paths in their life such as Dr. Dre creating his own sound and headphone products "Beats by Dr.Dre" which are one of the most popular and common headphones bought and used to date. Ice Cube on the other hand, went into the film industry as an actor and played many great characters in many successful films. These films included: RideAlong (1 and 2), Barbershop, Fist Fight and many more.

Music Now

Lets skip ahead to now. 2018. Rap/Hip-Hop Music. When you hear this what do you see? You know what I see? I see big names. I hear songs that I will forever remember. I look into the sky. I look on my phone. I look on the TV. Do you know what I see? I see names such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne. But, and this is a big but! Is it only me who see these rappers as now outdated compared to those who we have now. Yeah I know what your thinking. "They are all mumble rappers", "They all sound the same", "They are just SoundCloud rappers with 'Lil' in front of their name". Yes you can say this but I want you to do something for me. After or during you are or have read this, go listen to artists such as XXX Tentacion, Juice WRLD and 6ix9ine. Their music may sound the same but they talk about current feelings, current events within the world today and things that may cause them to feel better about themselves compared to how they were before. Yes it may seem bad the things they talk about but if you feel the rhythem and listen to their lyrics, you will feel what they feel, you can take my word for it.

If you follow music or have seen on the news, you may have seen in the past few years, great, inspirational, young people have died resulting in drug abuse and crimes. Two main lives that really inspired myself were: Lil Peep who overdosed on drugs and XXX Tentacion who was robbed and shot dead while in his vehicle. Their music was the best and I listened to it all the time and still do especially XXX Tentacion. With fantastic and breathtaking albums such as ?, 21XXX and 17 he's released so many songs giving others the passion and experiences that they already or have witnessed and felt. This is what is so good about music as it tells a big part of someones life and basically shows their story and life with just words.

Now onto the Most Under-rated and Upcoming rappers. Do names like Juice WRLD and Lil Pump ring a bell. If not great! But if so then this may change the way you feel about their music or such.

Juice WRLD and XXX Tentacion

Picture of Juice WRLD

Jarad Higgins, better known as Juice WRLD, was born on the 2nd of December, 1998. Juice WRLD is an American Hip-Hop Rapper and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is mainly known for his best hits, "Lucid Dreams", "All girls are the same" and "Legends". In Lucid Dreams and All girls are the same, he addresses his experiences and the feelings he has had with women and past relationships. These songs tend to be big hits as they are generalised and based upon what so many other people around the world have and currently feel. The song "Legends" addresses the tragic deaths of Lil Peep and XXX Tentacion. He calls them Legends and that only legends fall in the making meaning that they were only getting started as they were young and they wasn't even at the peak of their career. This grabs the attention of many young individuals of how easy and quick someones life can be taken even if they are famous or not.

Closing this blog I want to just say one thing. Don't always assume rap/hip-hop music is always to do with bad things. Music like XXX's and Juice WRLD generalise people and gives out to people how others feel and they are almost sending a message for help. This can be backed up in many ways just like some of XXX Tentacions songs where if they were to be played backwards they would have hidden messages which imply that the artists need help mentally.
