Music Is Life

Tell me I'm wrong.

Music is my entire life, without it I would die. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed I have music playing. There are so many songs that describe my every feeling. I grew up with my dad playing classic rock, and Alanis Morissette's "Hand in My Pocket" and "Ironic" were my favorite songs as a little girl.

Then moving in with my mom at the age of eight I learned there's a whole world of music from Spanish to R&B to country. I listen to everything now as an adult, but mostly country and reggae—though I'll throw some rock and Spanish in every now and then.

My mom is the reason I love music so much. Anytime she was having a bad day she would tell me, "let's go," and we'd hop in her truck and just drive with the music on full blast. If she was mad we would listen to hip-hop. If she was heartbroken we'd listen to Spanish and R&B. If she was in a good mood, and just felt like driving, we'd listen to everything, dancing and singing without a care in the world.

I miss those moments. I miss being able to call her up and go for a drive with her. We didn't have to talk, just listen to music and everything would go back to normal.

She was also a crazy clean freak and got in these crazy moods where she'd wake up super early, put country on full blast, and start deep cleaning the house. Because of her I now do this on a regular basis.

Everything I do is because of her and music. I can't mention my mom without thinking of a song. You couldn't ask her what her favorite song was because it changed by the day and by her mood. Same goes for me, one day I might like Adele's "I Miss You" and the next I like Luke Bryan's "Strip It Down."

Right now I have an insane obsession with Chester See and Leroy Sanchez, both do covers, but their voices are amazing and I can't stop listening to them. It's like they're singing exactly how my heart feels and every single word hits me like a ton of bricks. I want to cry, but I don't wanna turn it off, I wanna hear the songs over and over again until it no longer hurts. When a song no longer makes you feel a certain way that's when you know the pain is finally gone.

I remember my first heartbreak (high school my crush kissed my friend, that bastard). I would listen to Tyrese's "How You Gonna Act Like That" and Usher "You Got It Bad." POD, Avril Lavigne, and P!nk got me through my suicidal phase in high school.

When my ex-husband and I split up all I could listen to was "I Like It" by Pitbull, not because I was sad but because I was happy and wanted to go out and dance all the time. It was a happy moment in my life. When my mom passed away I kept Luke Bryan's "Drink A Beer" on repeat, and then Cole Swindell came out with "You Should Be Here" and nearly killed me with the lyrics.

Seems like this last year I've had nothing but heartache, so all the songs I hear are all about breakups like "I Hate You, I Love You" (gnash), "Treat You Better" (Shawn Mendes), "All I Ask" (Adele), "Used To Love You Sober" (Kane Brown), "We Don't Talk Anymore" (Charlie Puth), "She Still Loves Me" (SOJA), and "If I Told You" (Darius Rucker). This is my playlist more or less, none of it is very happy but it makes me happy, makes me feel at peace with the fact that my heart isn't the only one broken.

After a few weeks I'll be OK and I'll be back to listening to shit like "Post To Be" (Omarion), "Kno One" and "Out the Mud" (Kevin Gates), and "Chill Bill" (Rob $tone).

Whatever I'm going through in life there is a song that fits too well. Lyrics hit home like the song was written just for me and my situation. And then there's music that makes you feel good, makes you wanna dance, and makes you wanna run or pumps you up to workout. I listen to everything and don't judge anyone on what they listen to. You like trap music, that's cool, I can vibe with that. You like gangsta rap, that's cool too. You like Lil Wayne, that's cool—I think you have horrible taste in music, but that's still cool.

No matter what your situation is, there is definitely a song out there that'll help you get through it. If you're going through a breakup then there's a song in every genre that can help. If you've just moved to another state and don't know anyone then there's a song for that. If you're trying to lose weight then there are so many songs to help with that. If you just wanna get up and dance and feel good, hundreds of songs are out there for you to shake your booty to. All you gotta do is just open up your music app and find a playlist that fits you.
