Music Projects We NEED in 2019

Let's repeat history.

At the top of 2018, I predicted that some people would be dropping new music later in the year. 10/11 of my predictions were accurate. Let’s see if I can make predictions with even more accuracy this time around.

Pro Era

Toward the end of 2018, we saw two releases from Pro Era: Kirk Knight’s IIWII and Dirty Sanchez’s New Yuck City (two albums that I reviewed myself, check it out here). The albums had two totally different vibes and featured some other Pro Era Crew members. We also saw a release from Chuck Strangers. Joey Bada$$, CJ Fly, and Aaron Rose have been teasing new music for months. Hopefully we will get a release from all three of these artists soon. Also, at the end of 2018, Peep: The Aprocalypse was finally put on all streaming platforms along with a new Pro Era track called “King to a God.” Hopefully this is teasing a new Pro Era collective project.

B5

Toward the end of 2018, B5 dropped their new single “Do That.” For years the state of the B5 group has been up in the air. Around 2011, they changed their name to AUDIO and changed their sound to be more electropop. However, this name change was short lived and they became the Breeding 5 once again. They came out with “Say Yes,” a song that made it to 106 & Park and sounded more like R&B. After this single, the group seemed to separate, with each member doing their own thing, releasing solo music and 3/5 of them starting their own families. I hope that this new “Do That” single will lead to a full project release.

Chance the Rapper

Of course, Chance has been killing it lately. He’s been doing more political and social activism than ever and he dropped a number of singles last calendar year. He’s even had a number of features with different artists. It has been nearly three years since his last project release, Coloring Book. Not only was Coloring Book an incredible infusion of rap, gospel, R&B and pop, but it was the album that Chance used to advocate for streamed music to be allowed for Grammy nominations. This album is hard to follow up, but I hope that he follows it up nonetheless.

SZA

I have heard, several times, that SZA is done with the music industry and that CTRL was going to be her last release. But, she went on to perform on the Black Panther Soundtrack, Towkio’s WWW, and Jay Rock’s Redemption album. She’s also touring right now… at this moment. Just because she’s doing some guest verses and touring, doesn’t mean that she’s working on a new album, but I really hope that this is the case.

H. E. R.

H. E. R. has really taken the world by storm thanks to her songs “Focus” and “Best Part” with Daniel Caesar. She has an incredible voice and she can play both the piano and guitar very well. Her recent Tiny Desk Concert has already surpassed one million views and is an excellent display of her talent.

Flatbush Zombies

Their Vacation in Hell album was great. I just want more music, there’s nothing else to say.

Tyler, the Creator

Flower Boy was Tyler, the Creator’s biggest album yet, and as a cohesive project it was also his best album yet. The album was only released about a year and a half ago, but because of the fervor with which Tyler creates music, I think that we can expect to see another project some time this year.

Oddisee

Oddisee is an artist that I have known about for awhile, but I don’t keep up with him like I should. He definitely has the bars and storytelling ability to keep up with many of those in your top ten. He recently finished a tour of Asia, Australia and New Zealand and his social media pages have been quiet for about a month, but he did state that he would be spending some time in the studio.

Joyner Lucas

The last full project we got from Joyner Lucas was Angels & Demons with Chris Brown. Other than that, we have been getting a lot of singles and a few guest verses (and also that rap battle with Tory Lanez, which I covered here). It’s been years since we’ve seen a full project from him. I’m interested to see what Joyner’s next album will look like conceptually and how it will fit into the current spectrum of rap and the socio-political climate since many of his other songs have covered socio-political issues.
