Music: The Experience

There are few songs out there that allow each and every one of us to experience a phenomenon we can't quite explain.

Music is one of a limited amount of things that the mind, body, and spirit can experience at a level that is beyond our average function.

It starts with the silence between the mind and the source. A moment when you tune into the present and acknowledge energy in the form of waves of sound. Your mind processes the instruments, sound effects, and lyrics fusing, delicately placing you in a melodic trance. Melodies penetrate and seep into the soul streams throughout your body, leading to your core.

Your body capitulates, goosebumps erupt, hair follicles stand, each and every beat of your heart amplifies. The beat pulsates inside you. The frequencies within you slowly align with the sound being absorbed.

There is a familiar yet exotic sense in your center. It's as if the music in the airwaves arouse your soul, reminding it of its existence. An emotional euphoria is created. Be it sadness, excitement, anger, love, or a mix of a plethora of things that you don't know where to begin to explain.

The lyrics somehow relate to your exact thoughts and feelings. They tell you exactly what you need to hear. They settle in your mind and you can't help but feel that that song exists solely for you at that time and place.

You're left in a fervor. That song becomes unforgettable. Every time after that first listen, you feel the remnants of the experience, however, it will never be the same...

...Until the next soul striking phenomenon within a song.

How we take music for granted. Obsessing over songs played on the radio hundreds of times a day, listened to by thousands, written and sung by those that only desire fame and fortune. Why is it that we give in to the catchy melodies and petty, meaningless lyrics of the so-called music we hear today when we can experience such an intense phenomenon? It is those who have passion, those who have experienced music, that write songs that have the aforementioned affect.

Why are we giving these celebrities who, granted have talent, but perform accordingly to an agenda? Who use memes (if you don't know the real definition of "meme" you better do some research), flair, and money to get your attention? Why aren't we paying attention to the 10-year-old who can perform a masterpiece on the piano, blindfolded? Or those who use a simple beat and guitar and blow us away with their soulful sound? We are only feeding programmed icons that are there solely to make a profit and to be in a magazine.

What about the younger generation? Most of them hear music in the top 40s. There is a devastating lack of meaning and passion in a majority of all of those songs. Those songs are teaching the younger generation that appearance, sex, drugs, and material items are the priorities in life. That that is where happiness is derived. Where are the songs that give them an experience, that influence them to show love, kindness, compassion, that make them question their purpose, and that guide them in the direction to finding greater meaning in life?

Listen to your favorite song, not your favorite song that you know all the words to and can jam out to with your friends or family. But your favorite song that gives you that same fulfilling experience every time you hear it. Then share THAT song, not Taylor Swift's or Kendrick Lamar's newest release.

Spread this phenomenon. Introduce your kids, family, and friends to real music. Share what you experience. Share passion, love, kindness, soul. Share music.
