My Review of 'Tales from the Tour Bus': Season 2

Each season they talk about tour buses from different genres. Season two dives into funk.

Tales from the Tour Bus is an interesting concept that I think could have been influenced from The Chappelle Show. Dave Chappelle made skits with Charlie Murphy narrating his recollection of stories in the past when he used to hangout with his famous brother Eddie. He used to be able to hangout with tons of stars. Tales from the Tour Bus reminded me so much about Charlie Murphy's Rick James, Prince story in The Chappelle Show.

Lo and behold, we have the second season of Tales from the Tour Bus and it focuses on stars of funk music. Rick James and Prince are referenced multiple times in this season. In this season, they focused on George Clinton, Bootsie Collins, Rick James, Morris Day, James Brown, and Betty Davis.

Mike Judge narrates this interesting series. It's kind of funny hearing his voice narrate the series because I will forever associate his voice with Hank Hill of the popular cartoon King of the Hill. When I hear him narrating I keep thinking it's Hank Hill narrating for us.

Anyways, he gives the background history of each of the artists, how they rose to fame, interesting quirks and craziness that came along the way, and would explain their downfalls as well.

None of the stories seem too formulaic, but there is a bit of a formula to each of the episodes. Some of the tales from one artist kind of bleed onto a story of another artist that is covered in a later episode.

To me, it kind of seems that the order of the episodes don't really make sense, but perhaps he didn't plan them to be ordered in a particular way. For example, it starts off with George Clinton, Bootsie Collins, and then goes to James Brown. It seems that James Brown should have started first because he influenced both of these artists as described in each of their episodes.

There are actual eye witnesses that describe these tales from the tour bus and the stories can get wild and unbelievable. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode to explain that the stories may not be totally accurate, but after watching the episodes I believed some of the stories.

He picked some pretty heavy hitters for this season of Tales from the Tour Bus. I really hope that it picks up because they truly are interesting stories and their stories should be told as some of these artists truly had great influences on us.

Perhaps, after he's finished some more genres, he could revisit certain genres and pick more obscure artists from the genre like he did with Betty Davis.

As a TV series, it's great and easy to watch. It's mostly animated to exaggerate and act out some of the scenes that the eye witness accounts are describing. The animations are hilarious and I think it fits the mood and feel of what they're trying to do for this series.

This is also a very bingeable series. Each episode is about half an hour long and there are only eight episodes. I actually wanted more episodes per season for this. It's not a lot of content for one season. Especially since some artists' stories cannot be told in 30 minutes. Some of the episodes have two parts to explain the whole story.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this season and I think that they need to put more money into it to provide more stories for each season. Eight is simply not enough for one season. Also, I believe that this series should be promoted a little more. Not a lot of people know about this series and it's too bad because it's informative and a whole lot of fun. I'll have to give this season of Tales from the Tour Bus an eight out of 10.
