The 10 Most Underrated Avicii Songs

They should have been singles, and you should definitely stream them immediately.

Sadly, on April 20, 2019 we have to witness the first anniversary of Tim Berling's death roll around. It was a shock last year when one of the world's favourite DJs died, and everyone paid homage to his collection of hits that are cherished by thousands upon thousands around the globe.

Last week, on April 10, 2019, a new single "SOS" featuring Aloe Blacc came out, reminding us again why Avicii was a sensational DJ, and why he's so beloved with us. His upcoming album, entitled TIM, is coming out in June of this year, and all proceeds are going to a new foundation set up in Tim Berling's name, which helps with mental health and suicide struggles. This will once again remind us of the magic Avicii could create with his mind, but until then, we're reminded of the stunning creations he's already given to his fans.

On Saturday, there'll no doubt be a lot of videos and articles commemorating the best of Avicii's music and career, and rightly so, but there are tracks created by the beloved Swedish DJ that need more attention, and deserve to be played in his honour, as much as those that made him a household name.

This article is for that. To remind you of how truly incredible even the unpopular tracks he bestowed upon us were worthy of the stardom expected of him.

The first in our list comes from Avicii's debut album, True. This album was packed full of insanely good hits, so it's easy to understand why some of the lesser known ones were left out of the limelight. But "Liar Liar" is definitely a song that shouldn't fly under the radar. It's uplifting, builds up the beat in true Avicii style, and the melody and style makes the track feel like the epitome of summer.

Next, we move onto Avicii's album Stories. The second album from the DJ produces banger after banger, this included. Weirdly, not many of the tracks were released as official singles.

In fact, only two of the tracks made it big in the charts worldwide: "The Nights," and "Waiting For Love."

"Sunset Jesus" offers a fun introduction, great vocals, and sound effects in the track, which makes it simply feel good. And if good vibes aren't what you're after, maybe you shouldn't read the rest of the article...

The most recent of Avicii's EPs to be released before his death, AVICI offers only a couple of tracks, yet everything on there is phenomenal.

"You Be Love" in particular takes on a different twist from what we've heard previously from the DJ, with a slow, and almost acoustic opening, shortly mixing in to what we love best from him.

The calm melody and the rhythm make for what would be the evolution from Avicii, and shows the direction he was trying to take with his music. This track emphasises just how he was trying to create new flavours for us to enjoy, whilst still giving the people want they want: the heart-hitting beats that had been stitched into our hearts in the first place.

There's no other way to describe "Pure Grinding" other than a cool song. Though there is an official music video, it didn't peak in charts worldwide but deserves so much more recognition.

Another track from his second album Stories, "Pure Grinding" is almost an ode to what could have been. Even though the album was successful, and this song was released as a single, it just didn't hit the charts like Avicii songs normally do.

Which is bizarre. With the fast lyrics, and the sensational backing music, this jam is enough to make you want to move.

Yet again, #6 is another hidden gem from Stories. With gorgeous vocals from Zac Brown, Broken Arrows is quintessential Avicii with stunning lyrics and the hint of a beat.

When it drops, it's his trademark level of incredible, and it truly surprised me when I listened to this album for the first time back in 2015 that it didn't get the hype I thought it would.

Another way you can see how Avicii was taking his music to the next level was of this remix of Sandro Cavazza's "So Much Better." Appearing again on the 2017 "AVICI" EP, the DJ makes a gorgeous soul track into something that could immediately transport you to festivals around the globe.

Imagine listening to this masterpiece whilst lying on a beach in Ibiza and reveling in the fact that it didn't get the credit it deserved.

It's hard to look back at True and hear tracks that didn't get released that deserved it. The problem is with the artist's official debut album, True was honestly a masterpiece.

The singles released off of the album, such as "Levels," "You Make Me," "Hey Brother" to name a few, are all so incredible that it's hard to say they're undeserving of their place on the charts.

So I understand why this didn't compete, but hear me out.

Like I've said previously, all the singles from True are all insanely good, but there are tracks from that album that weren't released that were also good enough to have their own shot at stardom.

"Shame on Me" is just that, with instrumentals and beats that are infectious, and lyrics that are hilarious and relatable. If you're not screaming to this song by the end of it, there's something wrong with the way your mind works, as it deserves the same recognition as the likes of "Wake Me Up."

I'll admit: when I originally compiled this list, "Somewhere In Stockholm" was around the #7 mark. For me, it wasn't one of the most memorable songs that came out of the artistry that Avicii produced with Stories.

However, upon re-listening to this song, it forced its way up the list, strength by strength.

Why? Just listen to it. All of it.

It isn't classic Avicii, and it doesn't have the major drops you'd expect from a banger. Yet it somehow resonates. In an album entitled Stories, this track truly feels like Avicii's story. Tim's story.

It speaks of his hometown, his being away from there, his struggles there, and it's accompanied by stunning instrumentals and lyrics in the Swedish language, just as the bridge ends and the final chorus begins. Perhaps this wouldn't have made it as a single, but now given the context and just how beautiful the song is, it deserves the recognition more than several others.

It is truly an ode to Tim Berling.

I know what you're going to say, and yes, "Lay Me Down" was a single, and it did do quite well.

... But didn't it deserve to do more than *quite* well?

Like I've already stated, True was a powerhouse, and there were always going to be some singles that were released that didn't live up to its predecessors, but "Lay Me Down" should have.

It's underrated because it should have been overrated. Based on the triumph of several other singles, based on drops, lyrics and the general feel of the song, this track should have had the hype that was easily handed to other tracks.

It's infectious. Put it on in any room and just see the positive reaction it has: that, my friends, is the sign of a great song.

You may or may not recognise this song from a few Coca-Cola adverts Avicii collaborated on, so I felt it definitely deserved some recognition in this list, even though it didn't officially make my top ten.

Avicii rescued and resurrected the Conrad Sewell song originally chosen for the company's adverts, giving it a fun and memorable twist that now plays in our heads whenever we remember the commercials for the fizzy drink giant.

I don't know what you expected here, but there is nothing more deserving of the #1 Most Underrated Avicii Song place than this monumental single, which deserved so much better than what it got.

Released on The Nights / The Days EP–EP! It didn't even get the chance to be on an album! The Days features the vocals of Robbie Williams and tells us about making the most of your time on Earth while you're still young.

It has similar messages and themes that The Nights does, which is why the two tracks are the perfect pair for an EP. Yet, whereas The Nights went absolutely mental in the charts and on streaming services (and rightly so), The Days was left to rot in the dust.

It has meaningful lyrics, nostalgic connotations, the classic Avicii tropes mixed with new beats, and the drop... THE DROP that comes at approximately 2:50 is the definition of Avicii's prowess as a DJ. It is magnificent and incredible, and genuinely one of the best pieces of music he's created.

So if you take anything away from this list of my ranting about how basically everything Avicii produced is a work of art, a piece of genius, and how every track off of every album should have been a single beloved by all, take away that if you haven't listened to some of his lesser known songs, please do. There are some insane gems mixed in with the phenomenal hits we all know, love, and will cherish forever.

R.I.P. Avicii. A genuine loss.
