These songs, in no particular order, are some of the best songs I have heard in my life. Granted, I’m only 19, so I haven’t had much time yet. But, here is the best of what I have heard.
"Let It Be" by The Beatles
Okay, maybe this is an obvious one. But it’s a timeless classic that evokes feelings of happiness and bliss. The light sound of the song paired with the meaningful lyrics makes it an absolutely masterpiece that is sure to brighten your day.
"Mystery of Love" by Sufjan Stevens
Of course, I had to include the magical song from Call Me By Your Name. This song creates a dream-like feeling; sort of like you’re floating. It’s indescribable. It’s amazing. I can’t recommend it enough.
"Please Notice" by Christian Leave
This melancholy love song feels very personal to me. To me, it’s about being so in love with someone that you notice every little detail about them. And you wonder if they notice those same things about you. It hurts; it aches; it’s gorgeous and sad and it’s everything. If you’ve ever been in love with someone who doesn’t love you back, here’s your anthem.
"Should I See You Again" by Nat & Alex Wolff
This beautifully depressing song creates feelings of nostalgia in me that I can’t really even explain. It reminds me of people I’ve loved, and the feelings they’ve created in me; the lessons they have taught me. It’s hard to listen to sometimes, because it brings me back to some dark times in my life, but it’s worth it because it’s catchy, beautiful, and delicate.
"If I'm Being Honest" by Dodie
I couldn’t possibly write about my favorite songs and not include Dodie. She’s one of my favorite artists right now, and of all time. She’s incredibly original, raw, and real. This song is about having feelings for someone, and having it bring out the worst in you. It asks the question, “Could you love this?” I think it’s something we have all felt, at least I have. It’s relatable and heartfelt and gorgeous. Also the vocals are fantastic. Please listen to this if you’re a human.
"Long Live" by Taylor Swift
You didn’t think I wouldn’t mention Taylor Swift, did you? I know, this a bit of an older song. But, this song will stand the test of time. It’s a love song, yes. But, it’s a love song to us. It’s a love song from Taylor to her fans. It’s about the memories we have made, all we have accomplished, and the beautiful things we have all created together. And it’s obviously very well written; I would expect no less from Taylor. If you aren’t a fan of her, it might not mean much to you, but it means absolutely everything to us.
"Shovels & Dirt" by The Strumbellas
I discovered this song back in 2017, and it defined that summer for me. It was one of the best summers of my life, and this song was there with me to experience it. The lyrics are beautiful and meaningful, but it’s also pretty uplifting. It fit perfectly with that time of my life and I hope you can fit it somewhere in yours, too.
"Turning Out" by AJR
A song about growing up. At least, to me, that’s what it was about. It feels nostalgic and gorgeous. It reminds me that I’m still growing up, and I don’t have to have everything figured out yet. We can take our time. We don’t have to know everything or do everything right.
I hope you can find meaning or inspiration or simply entertainment in these songs just as I did. I hope you carry them with you through every stage of your life just as I will.
