It’s been a couple of years since Squidge has released new music. With an outstanding response to their first EP, What’s The Point to Care? (including songs like "Disappear Reappear" and "On The Mend") and a lineup change, it’s a good job something is around the corner. And their next release is exciting.

"Tired"

Released on March 15, 2019, Squidge’s new single "Tired" is exactly what is keeping us up.

Squidge has made their name through their honesty and simple rock n’ roll, working their arses off in the DIY scene to spread their word—a word that is sincere and real. Since 2015, they have taken the Bath/Bristol music scene by storm, gigging regularly to create their own community of messed up gig-goers that are in need of a little pick me up...

They write songs that are somber and (unfortunately) relatable. "Tired" is one I can see being sung by a crowd, hands in the air, going mad for a riff that will be on repeat in your mind for days.

Alongside the addictive riff and striding drums, James’ vocal delivery is something that stands out. The way it develops from a soft verse into something so chapped and desperate immediately calls for a response. It invites me to sing along. Yes... I am tired. I hate these ominous feelings of worry, self-doubt and regret too. This is why Squidge bring comfort with their songs, and this comfort is exactly what attracts their crowd. The relatability allows for people to feel less guilty about their misery and so Squidge’s community has been built because of this.

Although from the outside they may seem slightly rough around the edges, you can tell that Squidge cares immensely about the music they share with the world. Working in the DIY scene proves that they are prepared to use blood, sweat, and tears to get wherever they need to be. If that means investing all their emotion and hopelessness into their releases, then that's exactly what they are going to do. Not only do they care about their message and the lethargy behind that, but they care about the foundations—the music itself.

When listening to "Tired," you can see they carefully blend the speed and aggression of punk with the sincerity of pop punk and emo music, whilst creating melodies that will stay with you for a while—perhaps suited to a listener who's eyes haven't been opened to such a scene yet? Even so, "Tired" will welcome you with open arms, but perhaps won't send you to sleep.

“Grief is here to stay” may be a somewhat pessimistic outlook, but the drive behind this song proves that there are ways to combat that grief. As shit as it may seem, someone is on your side.

Moles, Bath

In spite of the song’s title, it gives so much energy. Which is exactly why it makes you feel something. It’s an open invitation to welcome those darker thoughts and allow them room rather than just letting them fester. Another reason why I can see Squidge crawling up the ranks with the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate, Moose Blood, and Basement. Following their sold-out shows at Moles, and after playing Komedia (Bath) twice, Squidge has not failed in translating their energy and candor from their live shows into their new releases. In fact, it is pleasing to sit down and hear it in a new light. Listening more directly allows me to realise the meaning behind such a thriving song, as well as their musical prowess—and honestly, I am impressed. Not only has Squidge identified those countless thoughts that ruminate inside your brain within their songs, but also within their marketing campaign. Their tense, teasing sets us up for even more excitement.

So keep an eye out for their future releases. There are more around the corner. I can only promise it will be worth your time.
