Why You Should Be Listening to The 1975

The 1975 is quite possibly the most popular unpopular band that you’ve never heard of.

My own picture from their concert on May 23, 2017

1. They’ve been together as a band for 15 years.

If they’ve been together for that long, there’s absolutely no reason to worry about them breaking up anytime soon, which is a good thing! Just imagine how many albums they could release...

2. They write all their own songs.

Every single one of their songs is based off of their own experiences, emotions, and lives. Every song is genuine and multi-layered, which is part of what they've got going — raw and human.

3. They’re genuinely invested in the LGBT+ community.

While their lead singer Matt Healy has never come out as a member of the LGBT+ community, he’s insanely supportive of the entire community and very openly explores his own sexuality. They dedicated a concert to the victims of the Orlando shooting and has a rainbow flag rather than a black and white one during “Loving Someone.”

4. “Chocolate”

Literally, the entire song is just one giant metaphor about weed, and is also an absolute bop. They’ve also got a song titled “UGH!” (Relatable, right?) If that’s not enough reason to listen to them, I don’t know what is.

5. Their Killer Instrumental Tracks

Not all songs on their albums have words; there are a couple on each of their albums that are just high-quality jam sessions. They’re nice to listen to, well-done, and they have such nice aesthetics to them. I find them to be an important and unforgettable part of their music and specifically the sound for each album.

6. They take awesome pictures for each song on the album.

As if they couldn’t achieve a high level of aesthetic, they have pictures that were taken for each track title of their last album (you are so beautiful, yet so unaware of it) that fits the song. Each song title is mounted on wire in neon and placed in a location that fits the track. The photos turned out beautifully, as you can see in the image below.

7. Their concerts are nothing short of a religious experience.

The entire room, for two hours, becomes nothing short of amazing. You laugh, you cry, you jam out with 300 of your closest friends. They are so good live and their lighting is next level (each song has it’s own lighting that simply brings the track to life); the entire thing is a theatrical production — no exaggeration. And the icing on the cake is that fact that Matt Healy drinks a bottle of red wine and smokes almost a whole pack of cigarettes over the course of the concert. 76/10 overall experience rating.

8. They’ve got a song for any mood.

Feeling kinda down in the dumps? Listen to “Somebody Else.” Want to dance with your friends in your room or in the car? Play “The Sound.” Feeling introspective and contemplative? Listen to “If I Believe You.” And if you just want to bop, “Chocolate” is always a good choice, not matter the occassion. They cover such a wide array of genres, you can find something for any emotion.

9. They’re British.

They’ve got cute accents, use adorable British slang like “gutted” and “nob,” and even have a song about not being American (“She’s American”). They’re everything you could be looking for in a boy band. Plus, they’re hot. (Have you seen their tattoos?!)

10. Their tickets are super affordable.

It varies slightly based on the venue, but their tickets are generally only $30, which is super good compared to some other concerts you could be going to. Their concerts are also at super local, more intimate venues, which is super cool.
