The ambitious band from L.A. had a year of success in the music world. Why?

The band's simplistic logo doesn't relate to their complex music.

Hip-hop has become the predominant genre of music in the United States. It offers listeners a wide variety of topics that can relate to one's life in many ways. However, something fresh and innovative was needed in a year full repetitive sounds. And this is when the experimental L.A. "boyband" Brockhampton saturated us (no pun intended) with three full-length projects in the span of a couple months. The Saturation trilogy will stand through the ages as one of the most risky but smart projects ever released, and its formula challenges modern sounds in a great way that will leave your mouth watering after each track. But what makes their craft so unique and powerful?

They're simply having fun and enjoying themselves. Each member delivers an incredible performance every time they rap, sing, and even speak throughout the course of this huge project. Kevin's open approach to his sexuality and younger life gives us many lines to remember, not to mention his ability to write catchy hooks and rap over the well-produced beats. Ameer takes the listener through a story of drug addiction and self-discovery similar to the heartbreaking moments that Joba delivers with his beautiful vocals. Merlyn is the life of the party, and he gives the listener some of the funniest lines on the project. Don and Matt also share great moments, both rapping about their personal life and the struggles they've gone through. We can't forget about Bearface, the singer of the group who delivers slow guitar ballads that make you tear up. Even the interludes or "skits" are well put together and tell a story narrated by our beloved friend Roberto.

Brockhampton also shines on the production and beautiful instrumentals. It's clear that they were influenced by many artists; the song "SISTER" sounds like a Death Grips banger but it has that "Brockhampton flow" that makes it unique. We can hear Odd Future influences, Kanye West here and there, but it doesn't affect the final product, which is good. Their beats and mastering are almost orgasmic and they never fail to impress me. Overall, a set of refreshing sounds that are risky and highly experimental.

If you haven't listened to "the best boyband since One Direction," I encourage you to do so. The innovative sounds and risky approach this trilogy has will leave you wanting for more after each track, and luckily for us, they plan to release a project this year who is known to be titled TEAM EFFORT. Let's hope this year is full of hard-hitting bangers, emotional moments and great performances delivered by Brockhampton.
