Your New Favorite Band—April 2019

My Band of the Month and Hopefully Yours as Well

When I first heard the name, “Rainbow Girls,” all I could think of was some “pop” genre girl band, or a weird k-pop group coming up from the underground. However, I was shocked to find that the self proclaimed, “Rainbow Girls” were a trio of “eclectic folk singers” (as stated on their website). I immediately fell in love with their raspy sound that I, personally, can appreciate no matter who you are.

The Rainbow Girls have been making music together since 2010, forming their band on the United States’ golden coast in Santa Barbara. They are composed of the talents of Vanessa May, Erin Chapin, and Caitlyn Gowdey who are all musically inclined in their own individual ways. They utilize a variety of different instruments such as slide guitar, upright bass, and of course, their soulful singing voices.

“One of our cover videos went viral, and suddenly we had people from all over the world asking us whether or not we had that song recorded anywhere. Instead of telling them all 'no,' we decided to go into the studio to record it and ended up making a whole album... the next day." I feel like this quote found on their website really embodies what these girls are about. They truly work so well together, and have so much passion for their art, as it may take other bands years to come up with a whole album. That’s not to say that the best albums should be made within a day, as there really isn’t a timeframe to making a great album, however, this quote shows that they really have a lot of dedication towards their music.

Something that one can appreciate from the Rainbow Girls is their creativity within the music studio. It is not often that bands are able to create tasteful songs with simplicity, and still make it sound interesting, however, these girls do it right. One such example is “American Dream,” which is one of their newer songs. All that is played is an intrinsic finger-picking tune, while sounds of passing cars and wind follow in the background. It is one of those songs that you can sit back and chill out to, yet not one that will make you fall asleep either.

If you decide you really like them and wonder when you can hear new music, don’t worry! They just released their new album, Give the People What They Want, which features ten dreamy and country-folk songs that will make you feel good. Personally, my favorite song off of it is, “Down Home Girl,” which includes their enchanting slide guitar riffs. I swear, I could listen to those every second of my day. Other favorites off of this album include, “Ruby,” and “Daydreaming,” but let’s be honest; every song on this album is golden.

This band is what lovers of folk, alternative, bluegrass alike, will love. This band of girls is incredibly underrated, and if you haven’t, check out the video I put above. I am certain you will not be disappointed. The Rainbow Girls are exceptional young artists who bring the classic spirit of soul back to life. It’s not often you find up and coming artists who capture the essence of the very root of music, which is soul; the passion.

I will be featuring a band of new up and coming musicians every month in addition to regularly posting articles on different music topics, so make sure you are stopping by frequently to get your alternative fill. Also, please keep supporting my writing. The reads and encouragement are greatly appreciated, and help me keep writing.

I hope your day is full of sweet tunes and lots of love!

Ciao!
