The list below contains the Top 10 Best Sad Love Songs. This list is based on research and on my own personal opinions.

This song was written by Adele and Dan Wilson. It is the second single and final song on her “21” album. This song is Adele’s first number one single in the UK and it stayed at number one for five weeks. This song also was Adele’s second song to hit number one in the USA. This song is about the end of a relationship with her ex-boyfriend. The words are haunting. “I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited. But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it. I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over.”

This song is featured on “Pretty Hate Machine” which was released in 1989. It is also featured on the Natural born Killers soundtrack. This song is heartbreaking and the lyrics are heart felt. “I still recall the taste of your tears. Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears. My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore. Scraping through my head 'till I don't want to sleep anymore.”

This song is the tenth track off the “Little Earthquakes” album that was released in 1992. This album reached number 14 on the UK charts and stayed on the top 75 charts for 23 weeks. This track was produced by Eric Rosse and Tori makes reference to her friend Neil Gaiman in it. The words are heartbreaking and about being broken up with for another girl. “All the world just stopped now. So you say you don't wanna stay together anymore. Let me take a deep breath babe. If you need me. Me and Neil will be hanging' out with the dream king. Neil says hi. By the way I don't believe you're leaving because me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream. I think it's that girl. And I think they're pieces of me you've never seen. Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen well.”

This song is track number ten and the title track off the “Disintegration” album. The Cure released this album in 1989 and the album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart. This album sold more than three million copies worldwide. This track is the soundtrack to the end of a long-term relationship. “But I never said I would stay to the end. So I leave you with babies and hoping for frequency. Screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy. Screaming me over and over and over. I leave you with photographs, pictures of trickery. Stains on the carpet and stains on the scenery. Songs about happiness murmured in dreams. When we both of us knew how the ending would be.”

This song was written by Jack Nitzshe and Sonny Bono. It has been covered by many artists including Cher, The Searchers, Smokie, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Stevie Nicks. The Ramones covered this song on their 1978 album “Road to Ruin”, and it was also included on their greatest hits collection “Ramones Mania”. This cover is a tear jerker. “I saw her today, I saw her face. It was the face I loved, and I knew I had to run away. And get down on my knees and pray that they go away.”

This song was written by Bret Michael’s and was the second single off “Open Up and Say Ahh”. The song is about the end of a relationship. The moment when you know it’s over but it hasn’t evened yet. “We both lie silently still In the dead of the night. Although we both lie close together. We feel miles apart inside.”

This song was written by Gwen Stefani and her brother Eric Stefani about her break up with band member Tony Kanal. This song reached number one on the Billboard hot 100 airplay list for 16 weeks. This song is No Doubt’s most successful international single and it made it to number one on the charts in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. You can really feel Gwen’s sorrow about this breakup through her words. “You and me. We used to be together. Everyday together always. I really feel that I'm losing my best friend. I can't believe this could be the end. It looks as though you're letting go. And if it's real well I don't want to know.”

The song was written by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson. This song is the 3rd single and title track off Amy Winehouse’s second and last studio album. The album was released in 2006 and was number 40 on Rolling Stone’s Top 50 albums of 2007 list. This track is heartfelt and has a blues feel to it. It’s about trying to move on after a breakup. “We only said goodbye with words. I died a hundred times. You go back to her and I go back to, I go back to black.”

This song was written by Prince. It placed 162 on the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” chart by Rolling Stone. It was also voted 10 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of The 90s” list. The lyrics are heartfelt and Sinead O’Conner really makes this song a tear jerker. “It's been seven hours and fifteen days. Since you took your love away. I go out every night and sleep all day. Since you took your love away. Since you been gone I can do whatever I want. I can see whomever I choose. I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant. But nothing. I said nothing can take away these blues.”

This song was featured on Guns N Roses 1991 album “Use Your Illusion I” and is one of the longest Guns N Roses songs. “November Rain” peaked at number three on the “Billboard Hot 100 Chart” and has sold more than 1,000,000 copies worldwide. November Rain is based on a short story by Del James entitled “Without You” In the story a rocker grieves over the suicide of his on again, off again girlfriend. Axl Rose was inspired by the story and it was part of his reason for writing November Rain. November Rains is also about his troubled relationship with ex-wife Erin Everly. The song is heartfelt. “When I look into your eyes I can see a love restrained. But darlin' when I hold you. Don't you know I feel the same. Nothin' lasts forever. And we both know hearts can change. And it's hard to hold a candle in the cold November rain.”

In conclusion, there are many heartfelt love songs out there. The ending of a romanic relationships can be depressing and these tracks capture those feelings very well. I hope you enjoyed this list! Be sure to check out my other lists!
