Lyrics to Songs Can Speak a Thousand Words

A song that I've listened to before, but never really paid attention to the lyrics

So, I've listened to this song before; Secret Love Song by Little Mix. I've always loved this song. Thought it was beautiful, and I liked to sing along with the music, but I never stopped to pay attention to the lyrics as carefully as I have today.

I work at my local Nordstrom, and I was working in the back today doing stock, and I was allowed to listen to music with my headphones on as I worked. It was coming to the end of my shift, and I was just about to leave when this version of the song came on. I didn't want to sing out loud, because of the fact I was in public with lots of people around me so it gave me the opportunity to listen to the lyrics.

Truthfully, I began to get an understanding of what the lyrics meant and I was towards the end of the song as I got to my car. Once inside, I connected my phone to the bluetooth speakers and immediately restarted the song. And because I was playing music from my Spotify playlist, I saw a picture of the band holding the pride flag with the song name underneath (see below).

(Sorry that the image is blurry)

Seeing this image confirmed some of my thoughts earlier as to what the lyrics were about. The song is about being with someone and loving them, but not being able to show affection the way that they want to. It was heartbreaking, and also made me happy at the same time. I understand that fear of walking down the street with someone I'd had feelings for, and all the stares that we'd gotten for simply holding hands.

Pride month is important for people like me. To show that we can conquer hate. That we can survive, but the people that have been asking 'what about straight pride?' have really made it difficult to let us have our moment. Be thankful that you can kiss the person you want to kiss without judgement, be thankful that you can be in love without someone else saying that it's wrong, and be thankful that you aren't kicked out of your home, your place of work, etc. for being who you are, and for loving who you love.

I hope that you take the time to listen to this song. It's really touched me, especially today when I took the time to listen to the lyrics. I had to listen to it another two times just to really enjoy the beautiful song.

(The original has Jason Derulo singing as well, but I think listening to the part two version without him in it is way better in my opinion. Listen to both if you'd like to).
