Logic's Surprising Surprise Album

Surprise!

Heading into the first track, "Bohemian Trapsody," I expected... trap. When the acoustic guitar made its way through my headphones I'm fully expecting a Gunna/Lil Baby type of track with 808s and double time hi hats. What I got was something that sounded closer to Jamiroquai. Funky singing over a wide open track. I found myself nodding all the way through the six plus minute song. The last few moments had that trap feel I expected earlier. Maybe surprise is a main theme.

"Can I Kick It?"

Can I kick it?

Oh, more acoustic guitar. Cool. "Can I Kick It" features Juto helping Logic harmonize. This time the guitar is melted over classic boom bap drums. It's a nice little ditty. Short and sweet.

"Time Machine"

Future Logic. Future and Logic in the future. I kid.

"Time Machine" starts with some nice piano riffs and our hero Young Sinatra crooning... He's crooning a lot. Oh, here's the guitar! This song is cool. It has a Kid Cudi feel. The production and mixing is top notch so far. I was expecting more lyricism and rhymes. Surprise!

"Pretty Young Girl"

Pretty good song

Oh, acoustic guitar. Maybe the pretty young girl that this song is about is playing all of this guitar on his album. She's kind of Yoko Onoing my experience right about now. I would totally skip this song if I wasn't reviewing it. It's not a bad song. I'm just tired of feeling like this. As soon as I typed that I was tired of the mood the sonics have me in they changed. Surprise! That was pretty cool. The trap beat and rap was a nice respite for the 40 something seconds it was present. Then back to the melancholy rock feel of "Pretty Young Girl."

"Supermarket"

It's a book too. Surprise!

So, this is a rock album? The title track would seem to be telling me that if I didn't realize it already. Logic sounds pretty good like this. I've never heard him this way but I haven't heard much from him. I was just doing a photo shoot down by the promenade in Brooklyn and some white kids were listening to some boom bap type rap that sounded great and pretty modern. I went over into their weed scented section of benches and asked excitedly about who they were listening to. The brave one of the group responded, "Logic," half incredulously. I was pleasantly surprised. When I heard about the surprise release I was quite looking forward to reviewing this album after hearing all of that second hand smoke he was spitting on those vintage sounding beats. I wanted all of the smoke! Surprise!

"Baby"

Oh, baby.

Who broke this boy's heart? He's out here singing his little heart out over you, girl. This is definitely Logic's "808 and Heart Breaks." This song actually feels like he's sitting there singing while playing that acoustic guitar himself. Belting out lyrics borrowed from Biz Markie of all places. "Oh baby yooooou"... He didn't leave his wife to be treated like this. Not this! This isn't how a rock star should feel! No, I'll never be a friend...

"By The Bridge"

Dead man by the bridge again? Sounds about right...

Logic can sure write a song. I can hear this track on plenty of movie scores. He probably should do this full time instead of rapping. He sounds great. More Logic Cobain than Young Sinatra though. If I was going through something and wanted to cry about it I'd put this album on for sure.

"Best Friend"

Am I right or what?

I am going to have to read the credits to see who is burning it down with this acoustic guitar. They tore this track up. I'm not mad at them at all. I really hope it's Logic. That would be a nice surprise... More of the same here. Singing, guitar. Folk rock Logic is in the building.

"Lemon Drop"

Sour and bland

I really hope Logic was going for a Limp Bizkit sound here because that's exactly what he got. No idea why he would want that but that's what he accomplished. Congratulations. It was very difficult not skipping that song. It's over now. It's over.

"I'm Probably Gonna Rock Your World"

Yeah, all of them. Cuz I'm a rockstar

This came on strong. Very promising. Different than the last handful of tracks. More funk. That Jamiroquai feel again! Cool. Oh, surprise, Logic sounds crazy here. His voice sounds like Pharrell making fun of himself singing in the shower while nobody is listening. I'm listening, Logic! I hear all of this man... This is really his first misstep vocally on the album. Maybe he just ventured out of his range. Maybe he's just joking around. Maybe this is all one big joke... With lyrics like "like the Price is Right, girl I'm gonna come on down" he can't expect me to take him seriously, right?

"Vacation From Myself"

The Perfect Spot

Instant toe tapper. Definitely riding slow with your hand out of the window music. Hearing Logic riff about vacations and sophistication it dawned on me maybe he's just freestyling with his band like Big Sean did with Metro Booming on their "Double or Nothing" album. That one didn't come out too good either. Sean had a song or two that I dug on there. Not the case here. So far issa no for me, dog.

"The Delorean"

Morty, Morty! I forgot where we parked.

Nice vibe. Almost a Childish Gambino drip. Almost. I can see the kids dancing to this at their proms. Hot boxing their mom's cars to this. It's cool. A great feeling track and Logic sounds like he's feeling it here. He's in the pocket.

"I Love You Forever"

Always on My Mind

This makes me sad. Not reflectively sad but sad that other people can feel like this. That they aren't good enough. This album is meant to be a soundtrack to the novel he wrote. That book must be a rollercoaster of emotions. I'd probably enjoy it more than the album and enjoy the album more after reading it. Try that guys. Read the book and then have a listen to this project. Learn from my misfortune.
