On October 17, 2018, Billie Eilish released a single titled, "when the party's over" and eight days later released a music video for the track.

The song took a completely different vibe compared to her last single, you should see me in a crown, and took a more melancholy approach to music. Though, Eilish has mentioned that she doesn't view the song as sad, but more of someone feeling anger towards a person. As you listen to the song there is a rather nice build up to the chorus, adding energy to the song, which makes you want to continue listening as it doesn't sound the same over and over again. "when the party's over" is able to keep a similar tone to the rest of her songs regarding the tone of her voice and background instrumentals. The song was written and produced by her brother FINNEAS (Finneas O'Connell) who also releases music under his own name.

Billie Eilish in an interview described that FINNEAS named this song "when the party's over" as its kind of a sequel to her song "Party Favor." Billie said in an interview with coup de main:

"It’s not really, “I’m sad,” you know what I mean? So “When The Party’s Over,” I feel like that’s such a sentence. It’s like, “I’ll call you when the party’s over,” you’re on the phone with someone and you can’t hear them, they can’t hear you, it’s loud, they’re mad at you for some reason. I feel like everybody’s had that struggle with someone – somebody on the phone yelling for some reason, and you’re just like, “You know what? Fucking leave me alone.”

I personally view the song as a song with few lyrics, a simple tone making you fall in love with the song and amazing vocals. The simplicity of having few lyrics makes you focus on the lyrics that are present and the meaning behind them.

FINNEAS on Twitter described how it was recording the song,

"When the Party's Over" was really hard to record. This song is so important to us and since we’d already introduced you to it, we knew we had to do something unforgettable. Hundreds and hundreds of vocal layers later, I’m so proud of what we ended up with and I hope you love it as much as I do."

The music video was able to tell a story without a ton of people or props. Many people in the comment section of the music video on YouTube suggested that the drink could represent the toxins of a toxic relationship, but she drank it anyway. Overall, they suggested that the music video left Billie Eilish with feeling one thing and that is the pain after a relationship.

The song "When the Party's Over" has been taken extremely well by her fan base and has even gotten her some new fans. The music video, which is rather simple, was still able to tell an amazing story. Overall, the song itself and music video are beautifully done and go well together.
