The Review - Part 1

I have loved 5 Seconds of Summer for a long time now, and I am a lover of music in general, so I thought I would write my own review of their third album for you all to read.

Youngblood

The title soundtrack and the second single of on the new album, "Youngblood" takes five seconds of summer into a new direction. I feel that this song, along with the rest of the album, is starting to move away from the Pop-punk genre and more towards just Pop. It doesn’t mean by any stretch that I dislike it, but I feel it shows that the boys are beginning to evolve their music style. You can see this through their two previous albums and "Youngblood" is no exceptions. Their music is growing up with them. The song specifically has a more synthetic guitar sound which I like. This only seems to be the main line through the verse with the drums being the more prominent feature of the chorus. It feels that this is a great upbeat break up song. With it being about the loss and the aftermath of the break it up. This song really uncovers the feeling when someone leaves you when you aren’t ready for the relationship to end.

Want You Back

The first single off "Youngblood," this song, like the one previous, is about a breakup. The intro brings in a keyboard which is something that we have heard before from 5sos but isn’t something that they use very often. This is also another song about being left and that seems to be creating a theme through this album. They seem to be sticking with a very simple bringing to the chorus again and then building it up later in the chorus. I like this and how it highlights that main lyric in the chorus which is of course "Want you back." There are a few specific details in the song such as "the roses on your shirt when you told me this would never work." This certainly seems to indicate that the song has been written from some experience. I must admit when I first heard this song a few weeks ago (because it was hard not to hear it) I wasn’t a massive fan. I felt that this was defiantly a very Poppy song and that it was a weird move for the boys but, as I have listened to it more and more, it has grown on me and I’m just hoping that I like the rest of the album as I do this song.

Lie to Me

Yet another song about a breakup. It defiantly gives me the vibe of "Happier" by Ed Sheeran, with the lyrical choice. Unlike the first two songs, it doesn’t cover up the fact that it’s a sad song with the major melody. I like that about this song. This song seems to tell the story of a breakup where one party has said that they weren’t happy with the relationship but that they could stay friends and that’s what has happened. This is because the person singing is still in love with their ex and they are trying to hold on to any part of them that they can. They realize that they are being used but they can’t let it go. I think this song is a clever way to show an abusive relationship and how, even once it is over, it can continue to be abusive. I don’t know if they meant to do that but that is the storyline that I am getting from the lyrics.

Valentine

When I first listened to this song all I could think was Twenty-one Pilots and their song "Heathens." This song isn’t a breakup song (finally) but as with some of the previous songs, it covers up the true emotion of the song by using minor keys despite it being a happy song. They are singing about how they are falling more and more in love every day. The second verse is all about how passionate the love is and how it almost seems like the pair will break just purely from how heated the love is. It is almost like there is an essence of doubt about how long the relationship will last before it burns out. It took me a few listens but this song is starting to grow on me. I still can't shake "Heathens" out when I listen to it, unfortunately.

More reviews will come in part two.
