Christina Aguilera's Albums Ranked

From Worst to Best

In her long career, Christina Aguilera has earned many nicknames and titles. Some are highly honourable like "the voice of our generation," and "princess of pop." Some not-so; others like Floptina and Craptina. Though many people nowadays simply just refer to her as Xtina, it's hard to believe it's been nearly twenty years since I first heard "Genie In A Bottle" on the radio and been a lifelong fan of hers ever since. This is the case of many fans who call themselves Xtina's fighters.

It has been clear that Christina doesn't like repeating herself. The one thing that is exciting about her discography is that you never know what she will come up with next. Her jump from genre to genre is a pathway for many listeners to get into new kinds of music they wouldn't have known had it not been for Christina.

Many popular artists today have also stated her as a source of inspiration, especially Demi Lovato who has done a song with her which will be in the upcoming album this June.

To celebrate the release of her eighth studio album, I've ranked her previous studio albums in order of my preference. This is just my personal opinion. Sales and charts have had no influence on this list.

Before we start, here are some mentions of some of the other albums. I think out of all the Christina Aguilera albums, I would say my least favourite would be her demo album, Just Be Free. It's one that she did when she was very young. You can tell it's her singing, but it seems she hasn't quite found her voice yet. There were no plans to release this album as it was more of a warm up to give Christina more experience. It's still not bad though, and you can feel the 90s vibe in it.

Then there's Keeps Getting Better...a decade of hits. I really like this compilation and I think it's a good reflection of her career. I wasn't too keen on the remakes of "Genie In A Bottle" and "Beautiful" at first, but looking back, I could see it was a glimpse of what was to come with Bionic.

I think the Burlesque film is really cheesy, but I love it. It's a guilty pleasure for me and I particularly love the soundtrack. It's nice to see Christina and Cher work together on this one.

So there's my special mentions. Now I'm going to rank Christina's albums. Just so you know, I like all the albums and I think they're all good. And I'm a fellow fighter too.

One album had to be at the bottom, and sadly, it had to be Lotus. When I first listened to it, I didn't warm up to it much as first. But I absolutely adore the opening to Lotus and I feel that the introduction was really poetic, brave, and strong. "Your Body" is quite a catchy hit, but my personal favourite song from this album is "Army Of Me."

Christmas is one of the biggest celebrations in the world. So there is no surprise that there are a lot of Christmas albums out there that gather dust for eleven months then all burst out in December. My Kind Of Christmas is mainly all covers. A lot of people don't seem to like this one as it doesn't stand out much from the others, but I really like Christina's version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."

The Spanish counterpart to her self-titled debut album. Maybe I should have put these two as a tie, but both albums have a different sort of vibe to me even though the songs are the same. Music is a universal language, but I lean towards the English version more purely for the nostalgia. Though I'll say I like the Spanish version of "Come On Over" more than the original because I think it flows a lot better. It's a shame it's her only Spanish album. I'd like to hear more of her hits in another language.

This record brings back so many memories. Genie In A Bottle hasn't aged so badly, and I like a lot of the songs on this album, especially the singles. It's worth checking the bonus track, "We're A Miracle." Pokémon fans will remember this song from the credits.

I love the jazz tone to this album. It's got a lovely vintage 50s feel to it. Even though the image to the album is clean and squeaky, Christina still doesn't lose her dirty side with the cheeky innuendos thrown in at "Candyman." Christina's ballads and raunchy dance anthems are the highlight to all of her albums. Hurt is one of her best ballads along with "Save Me From Myself" which I feel is really underrated.

I think Back to Basics is a better album. It has better lyrics, but I prefer Bionic.Bionic got me super hyped. I remember rushing to HMV to get the album as soon as it came out. This album really divided opinion. At first I felt her vocals weren't fully utilized as they should be, but now looking back, I can see that this album was very experimental. The album is a party album, and a lot of the songs are dedicated to fashion and sex.

This one is a no brainer for me. Her previous albums may have helped her achieve worldwide stardom, but I think this album is her magnum opus. If you had to listen to one Christina Aguilera album, I would recommend this one. This one stands out from all the others for it's law lyrics, extremely diverse tracks, signature hits, and the way the songs tell a story. It also contains my favourite Christina track which is "Fighter."

So where will Liberation reach in my rankings? Who knows? Only time will tell. I've pretty much accepted that no album will ever top Stripped, but it's not too late to change my mind.
