Little Ships
Dover Harbour - Kent, England - June 4, 1940 I had been watching vessels of all shapes and sizes coming across the Channel for several days, many of them overflowing with men. That's what those of us waiting on the shore wanted to see. If a boat had available space in it - as, unfortunately, some of them did - that meant that some of her desperate passengers didn't survive.

The Persistent Crab
I am a Cancer whose sign is symbolized by a crab. There's a lot I don't like about that statement. Too much negative connotation there. Knowing that the word cancer comes from the Latin word for crab doesn't make me feel much better about it. A crab is not the representation I would have chosen, had I been given the choice. After all, who would choose a lowly crustacean over a mighty lioness or a bull or a ram - a fearsome creature that inspires awe and reverence?

The Original Trailblazers
As someone who considers myself a lifelong student of American history, I've been ashamed to admit, even to myself - and especially in the last year - that I've been largely ignorant of how whitewashed my education has been. A glaring example of the gaping holes in my education is the fact that I had never even heard of Juneteenth until last year. Why had I not taken it upon myself sooner to learn all I could about Black history, a very significant part of American history?

Aiding Artisans
It's all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Planning parties (not a good idea this year). Cooking and baking. Decorating. Having the best Christmas display in your neighborhood, perfectly choreographed to music or tailored to a movie theme. It's such a busy and stressful time of year that many people have seen as a silver lining in the pandemic a good excuse to cancel plans and have a more relaxed, toned-down holiday.

Un Voyage Historique Français Sombre et Joyeux
I have long wanted to visit France. I have a great appreciation for French culture, and I've learned a bit of the language. A friend from college got to spend an year in that beautiful country while her husband studied in Nice. How I envied them!

The Light Side of 2020Second Place in Thankful Thoughts Challenge
What I am most thankful for this year is the single word that Princess Leia spoke in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The Rebel Alliance had just suffered huge losses at the Battle of Scarif. But the hard-fought-for piece of intelligence that was passed into Princess Leia's hands gave all the freedom fighters hope for a coming victory.

Need a Break from Politics? Let's Talk Pawlitics!
When a ginger-tabby kitten with a stub tail was found in Talkeetna, Alaska, who could've purr-dicted his pawlitical future? Stubbs was elected the town's honorary mayor after voters opposed to the human candidates led a write-in campaign. The town’s general store became his “mayoral office”. Thirty to forty tourists visited each day to see the feline mayor, who went to a nearby restaurant every afternoon and drank catnip water out of a wineglass or margarita glass. Stubbs served as mayor for 20 years and passed away in 2017. Bonus fun fact: Stubbs was also a write-in candidate for the 2014 U.S. Senate race in Alaska.
